Manchester United are interested in FC Basel central defender Jonas Adjetey and have ‘initiated a move’ to sign him in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Africa Foot, who report that Manchester United are interested in the 21-year-old, who they consider as ‘one of Europe’s most promising defenders’.

The Ghanian is a current undisputed starter for FC Basel, with 25 Super League appearances under his belt so far, and Manchester United have taken notice of him.

They have reportedly sent ‘emissaries’ to observe the youngsters performances on several occasions this season. They’ve been impressed and he has ‘completely won them over’ with his aerial ability, anticipation and ‘immense potential’.

According to Africa Foot’s information negotiations are currently underway for the youngster but there is no information on a possible transfer fee.

They do point out that RC Lens made an offer of €6m for the defender last summer. This was rejected by Basel as it was deemed insufficient. The Swiss club hopes to obtain a ‘much higher amount’ than this for the defender.

Now we would take this with a pinch of salt as Africa Foot have been regularly promoting various African talents for a while and regularly linking them to big clubs in Europe, including Manchester United.

We wouldn’t be surprised if such a player was on United’s radar, though, with the focus now very much on young talent for the future under Ruben Amorim.
