Manchester United are ‘closely monitoring’ the situation around Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha.
That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who insists the interest is there but there are no concrete talks happening at present.
Manchester United were linked with a surprise interest in Nmecha earlier this week ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer of rebuilding the squad for Ruben Amorim.
The midfield is a key area and somewhere Manchester United have struggled in and Nmecha was reportedly being eyed as an addition to solve that.
Plettenberg confirms other reports that they are interested in the Borussia Dortmund man but insists no concrete talks have taken place with Dortmund or Nmecha.
One reason is because of the abundance of options Manchester United already have in midfielder. There is also the fact that Dortmund are demanding at least €50m for him. Both of those are stumbling blocks.
The bigger question is why Manchester United would want him anyway. He’s not exactly a shining star for Dortmund or the ideal profile for the system Amorim employs.
United already have Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer as defensive midfielders and there’s also Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount. Christian Eriksen is set to depart, and it remains to be seen what happens with Casemiro but Nmecha wouldn’t be needed either way.
It’s a lot of money to spend when there’s other problems to be fixed and it makes this particular transfer rumour seem a strange one.
