Manchester United’s interest in signing Marcos Alonso may have been handed a boost as Barcelona ‘will try to get rid’ of the player this week.
That’s according to AS, who say the imminent arrival of Joao Cancelo at the Camp Nou has made Alonso ‘expendable’ and Barcelona are now keen to see him depart.
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Alonso over the last few days as they search for a new left-back following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
That has left them short in the position and they’re now scouring the market for a low-cost solution to fill in the gap. It is part of that search that has seen Alonso’s name brought up.
The newspaper explains that the Catalans need to balance the accounts for Financial Fair Play and, thanks to arrivals at the club, namely Cancelo, Alonso is now ‘expendable’.
He is one of several planned departures the club have lined up to help balance the books, particularly as he is on high wages.
They’ve made it clear that the player does not have a role to play in the main squad, particularly with Cancelo arriving as he’s also comfortable in the left-back position.
Thus, they are now trying to close a sale to balance the accounts for Fair Play and selling – or even loaning – to Manchester United, who have a need, would make sense.
The potential stumbling block is that earlier reports had made it clear Alonso was not keen on the switch, but perhaps that has now changed given it’s been made clear he won’t be playing.
