Manchester City are meeting with Julián Álvarez’s agent today to discuss a new contract for the striker after his success at the World Cup.
That’s according to journalist Darío Montero, who says the youngsters superb first season in England has necessitated a change of plans at the Etihad.
Álvarez joined Manchester City in a €21.4m deal from River Plate in the summer, with a deal wrapped up in January last year.
He had initially been signed as a player for the future, particularly as Erling Haaland’s arrival in the summer meant playing time would be limited this season.
He’s established himself as part of Manchester City’s squad this season, though, making 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight and assisting two.
He is also a World Cup winner after playing a key role in Argentina’s success in Qatar during the winter, bagging goals against Poland, Australia and two in the semi-final win over Croatia.
That success has necessitated a change in plans for Manchester City, who are meeting with his agent today according to Montero.
“Just some information that comes from the environment of Julián Álvarez,” he told El Chiringuito.
“He has a contract until 2027 but the first contract they made to Julián was for a player who was going to go on loan and since, obviously he has not gone on loan and his performance has been what it has, they are going to modify the contract and improve it.
“They’re just meeting in Manchester, his agent and Manchester City, for them to make that improvement to the contract that is more than deserved.”
