Manchester City want to beat the competition to the signing of RB Leipzig defender Joško Gvardiol and have made an ‘XXL offer’ to sign him.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, who say the defender’s ‘exceptional World Cup’ has convinced City to move for him.
They explain that Gvardiol has a number of European clubs chasing him, with Chelsea and Manchester United already offering €95m and €90m respectively.
Manchester City are also looking for a player in that position despite boasting a backline of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Aké.
They are ready to ‘use all the means at their disposal’ to get the Croatian and ‘quickly bypass’ the competition for his signature.
They’ve already spoken to the player, via Pep Guardiola, and are now keen to buy him in January but leave him with Leipzig until the end of the season.
To make the Saxons ‘comply’, they have made an ‘astronomical offer’ of €110m including bonuses, plus 20% resale on any capital gains. That would make Gvardiol the most expensive defender in history.
A meeting took place between Manchester City, Leipzig and Gvardiol’s representatives in Zagreb in the last few days to discuss the potential deal and the suggestion is that things should continue to progress in the coming days and weeks.
