A quite unexpected rumour was brought by Italian outlet Calcio Mercato on Friday, as they claimed Manchester City are interested in Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The outlet features a very short article in which they say Napoli had been following the player, and he’s now disputed by the likes of Barcelona and Pep Guardiola’s side.

Calcio Mercato doesn’t credit the story to anyone else.

Darwin Nunez has indeed been linked to Barcelona, with his agent even speaking to the Catalan press recently, but these rumours about Manchester City are really something new.

Darwin Nunez joined Benfica in a €24m deal from Almeria this summer. He already has five goals and six assists in ten matches for the Eagles, and was on Friday’s front pages in Portugal after scoring a late equaliser against Rangers in the Europa League.

We all know how big Portuguese clubs work, so if Barcelona or Manchester City are indeed coming for Darwin Nunez, they’ll be paying a few times more than Benfica did.

In recent years, Manchester City have signed both Ederson and Ruben Dias from Benfica, so it’s a familiar transfer route for Pep Guardiola.
