Manchester City defender Eric Garcia has been left ‘angry’ that he wasn’t allowed to join Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who explain what happened behind the scenes with the potential transfer.

They explain that Barcelona wanted Garcia to ‘reinforce’ their defence and ‘fixed him in’ months ago, believing his quality, age and price – which would be low as his contract expires next summer – would all make him a good buy.

They approached him to ask if he would like to return to the Camp Nou and received a positive response, so then approached Manchester City.

After ‘several contacts’ they presented them with a final offer of €10m fixed and another €8m in variables.

City rejected this outright, despite the fact that they risk losing Garcia on a free in less than a year, a decision that left the centre-back ‘angry’.

He can’t understand why Manchester City have blocked a ‘dream’ move for him, especially when Barcelona were offering a ‘worthy amount’ for a player in his contractual situation and have plenty of cover after signing Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake.

City’s argument is that they need Garcia because ‘the season is very long’ and despite having Laporte, Stones, Ake and Dias they need a fifth option and Garcia fits the bill after featuring last season.

Fortunately for Garcia, this is not the end. He could still end up at Barça in January and the fact that he played in the Champions League last night makes no difference, as a change to the rules means the Spanish giants can include him in their squad should they make the latter stages.

Still, it seems he was less than impressed with Pep Guardiola and co this summer, who very much blocked a dream move so that they could keep him as a squad player.
