Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano this week attended Tech Spirit Barcelona 2023, in Llotja de Mar.

There, he talked a lot about the management of the City Group, who’ve been getting huge attention in Spain because of Girona’s surprise campaign in La Liga.

Quoted by Sport, Soriano talked about how they try to balance entertainment and business at Manchester City and their partners.

“We have not applied new technology or disruptive ideas, we have applied the logic of other industries to the football sector. The key to our success is to have a balance between entertainment and player development.

“Clubs in South America take a lot of players and specialise in increasing the market value until the players have to make the jump to other leagues. It happened to us with Taty Castellanos. He couldn’t grow any more in Uruguay and we sent him to the United States. From there, to Girona and then we sold him to Lazio.”

Sport points out that at the event, Soriano also explained that having such a big group helps them gather the same sponsors and have an easier task to increase their income as a whole.

Girona are currently top of the La Liga table, two points above Real Madrid. It seemed like just a good phase at first, but we’re now close to the middle of the season and there’s already some talk about whether they could keep up with that form, becoming some Spanish version of Leicester City.

As the group can only benefit from that, Manchester City will certainly be rooting for their partners and watching the talents they have there.
