On Tuesday, Manchester United suffered a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford and the result saw them finish bottom of their Champions League group.

This means the Red Devils have not only crashed out of the Champions League but have also failed to qualify for the Europa League.

After the tie, Jonny Evans spoke to Sweden’s TV4, relayed by Fotbollskanalen, and said that Manchester United knew it would be a “tough night” against the Bavarian club.

Erik ten Hag’s side have also been knocked out of the EFL Cup and are currently sixth in the league, trailing fourth placed Manchester City by six points.

Manchester United have one win in the last five matches and three in the last 10. The 35-year-old isn’t clear about what needs to be done for his side to improve their results.

“I don’t know. I don’t have the answer to that. We all have a desire to get better as a team, and it is our responsibility as players to succeed in that,” he said.

“We must continue. We have a big game this weekend [against Liverpool] and can’t feel sorry for ourselves.

“If you look at the last few weeks, the results have been inconsistent. It shows where we are as a team, but the positive thing is that we know we can achieve good results.”

Ten Hag is certainly under pressure and there were reports in the English press last week stating that he has lost part of the dressing room. These claims were dismissed at the time, and the centre-back has now backed his manager.

“He is a fantastic coach and I have no doubts about him. In January we get a new window and a chance to improve the team,” Evans explained.

“Not playing in Europe will give him more time. We’ve had a tough period but hopefully we’ll get players back from injuries and get more consistency in the team. It would be good for him [Ten Hag].”
