Sunderland AFC have apparently joined the race for the signing of coach Francesco Farioli.

It’s Italian outlet Calciomercato who reveal that pursuit today, claiming the manager is now ‘at the top of the preferences’ for the Black Cats.

It’s said Sunderland would like to replace Tony Mowbray for the next season, and now have the former Alanyaspor boss as their main target.

Following Farioli’s exit from the Turkish side in February, it’s claimed he’s ‘ready for a new project’, as clubs line up to sign him.

Calciomercato point out that besides Sunderland, there are other English clubs thinking of him, as well as Braga in Portugal.

It would also be no surprise if he takes charge of an Italian club, since he only worked in his home country as an assistant, and may want to prove himself in Serie A.

Farioli had been in Roberto De Zerbi’s staff at Benevento and Sassuolo. His former boss is now succeeding in the Premier League in charge of Brighton & Hove Albion, so it would definitely be interested to see his apprentice taking that same path, even it means potentially starting in the Championship.
