Rangers head into their Europa League trip to Portugal firmly in the spotlight after comments from Francesco Farioli. The Porto manager spoke at length about his match against Danny Röhl’s side and Rangers’ recent progress.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of FC Porto’s reception of Rangers at the Estadio do Dragao, Farioli confirmed that the Ibrox side have previously shown interest in him. Still, he made it clear that his focus remains fully on his current role.

“Yes, I have already had contacts with the club in the past. It is a great club, with a lot of tradition in the United Kingdom,” he said. However, Farioli stressed that circumstances took him in a different direction than Rangers.

He recently renewed his contract with FC Porto and underlined his personal satisfaction in Portugal. Both he and his family are settled and happy. According to the Italian coach, his mindset is entirely centred on Porto at this stage.

More than polite diplomacy towards Rangers

Farioli showed clear familiarity with the Scottish side’s recent form and tactical evolution. He revealed that he has followed their journey closely, noting a clear upturn since the arrival of the new manager.

“I have followed the team, yes. They did not start well, but they have improved a lot since Danny Röhl arrived,” he explained. He highlighted Rangers’ recent points haul and tactical flexibility, pointing to their ability to switch between a back four and a back three.

“Rangers are very lucky with the coach they have,” he said. “We have a lot of respect for Rangers and we have to maintain a high level of motivation.”

However, the Porto manager insisted there will be no complacency. He stressed the importance of full motivation and awareness for the decisive Europa League fixture, making it clear that Porto will not underestimate the Scottish visitors.

With Rangers arriving in Portugal in strong form and earning public praise from an opposing manager, the stage is set for a highly competitive European night.
