Istanbul Başakşehir manager Çağdaş Atan has told the Turkish media they wanted to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilón during the summer window, and he’s still keen to fill the position.
The Spaniard was linked with a move away from the Premier League side throughout the summer, but remains with them.
Speaking to Beinsports, Atan was asked about Super Lig club’s transfer targets during the last transfer window, and he revealed they were interested in the Tottenham player.
Atan said they held talks with the player over a possible move to Istanbul and that he was among a number of fullback options for them. He believes if they could have brought in a defender like Reguilón then their season may have gone more to plan.
“I had a FaceTime call with Trippier in person. We tried to bring Alex Telles in a lot; We met with Reguilón. We chased the transfer of Onur Bulut until the last moment. We could have been in a much more comfortable position if those transfers had happened. We have to get a right-back and a left-back…” said the İstanbul Başakşehir coach.
Reguilón spent last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford, and has been surplus to requirements at Tottenham since his return. He’s made just one brief appearance in the Premier League in this campaign and needs to move on.
The Spurs man has also been linked with a reunion with Jose Mourinho in recent weeks following reports of interest from Fenerbahce.
