Daniele De Rossi has been a great managerial appointment for AS Roma so far, with the club legend managing eight wins, two draws and a single defeat… with the latter coming against Inter Milan.
Of course, the assumption would be that Roma will work to keep the manager in the longer term. They don’t have him tied to a long term contract, with Corriere della Sera reporting he almost signed up blind, ‘out of love’ for the club.
With the Italian media being the Italian media, there’s no way they can let the almost inevitable happen without drama… so Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion have been linked by the newspaper.
It’s easy to see why Brighton has been plucked down as a choice, given they already have an Italian manager, Roberto De Zerbi, who is half expected to leave in the summer. That’s good chance that’s all the basis that was needed to go from.
Quite why they’e plucked Newcastle United from thin air is down to the guess of anyone. Eddie Howe certainly hasn’t done a poor job this season given the injuries he’s been up against, and it would be harsh for the Magpies to sack him.
To sack Howe and replace him with De Rossi would be a wild decision, and despite Corriere della Sera saying Newcastle are interested it feels like an effort to hype the Italian manager and perhaps help with a longer term contract.
When De Rossi was in his playing days there were claims of Premier League interest ahead of any renewal, and often outside of that time. It would appear that theme will continue with his management.
So the links are being made in Italy, but there’s surely nothing in this for Newcastle United. The idea of De Rossi snubbing interest from England, whether it exists or not, also helps to build his Roma legend further.
