As things stand, Lazio are close to having the squad they want, at least in Maurizio Sarri’s eyes, with just a new left-back missing.
Emerson Palmieri was high on the list, but with the Italy international heading to West Ham, all eyes have turned on Sergio Reguilon, currently at Tottenham.
The defender appears to have fallen out of favour under Antonio Conte, who decided to bring in Ivan Perisic and use Ryan Sessegnon for the left hand side of his team instead.
That’s why a way out is being looked at, and the Tottenham defender is a player Sarri wouldn’t mind in his team, but that decision ultimately isn’t his.
This is what Corriere dello Sport are reporting on Thursday, explaining that Claudio Lotito, the club’s president, ‘must be convinced’, despite his manager ‘pressing constantly’ to get his man.
The idea of signing Reguilon from Tottenham ‘was born in the hours of August’ after they failed to get Destiny Udogie (who ironically ended up at Spurs) and Giovani Lo Celso.
Unlike the Argentine, ‘the conditions guaranteed by Fabio Paratici are even more favourable and Lazio are thinking about it: loan with a right of redemption and a wage mostly paid for’.
An aim for Reguilon is that he ‘must win the call-up for the World Cup in Qatar’, which will only happen if he gets regular game time.
It’s said that ‘until yesterday afternoon, the contacts with Spurs had been indirect’, but today (Thursday) ‘we will find out if something has moved in the night and if it is maturing’.
There’s also the worry that competition could appear for the Tottenham player as Paratici ‘and his agent Kia Joorabchian have already talked about it’, with a potential ‘proposal from France on the way’.
