Even though Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has been mentioned as one of the possible targets Tottenham Hotspur have to replace Antonio Conte, the Portuguese media never really made a big thing out of it.
The Lisbon press may be a little sensationalist at times, but they always made it clear there’s not a big possibility that the coach would leave the Lions to take charge of Spurs in the coming weeks.
Now as newspaper A Bola today features a piece about this situation, they actually bring interesting arguments why Amorim is choosing to stay at Sporting.
First of all, it’s said the coach was indeed in a ‘list’ Tottenham had of potential replacements for Conte, but it’s said he ‘never considered this hypothesis as very viable’.
The first reason for the rejection is the ‘tempestuous temper’ of Spurs chief Daniel Levy. A Bola don’t really say a lot about that, but takes the businessman’s attitude as a motive for the manager to stay away from the London side.
Then it’s said that Ruben Amorim wouldn’t like to leave Sporting during the season. And even if that approach was made in the summer, he’s still focused on winning a league title with the club before the end of his contract in 2026.
The Lions, meanwhile, are said to be relying on his €30m release clause, even though their president Frederico Varandas knows that ‘sooner or later’ the manager will leave for a ‘more mediatic league’. They just hope that happens at the end of his commitment.
Still speaking of Tottenham’s chase for a new manager, A Bola says Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino are those in ‘pole position’ for the job.
