Florian Wirtz’s decision to join Liverpool and not Bayern Munich was always going to be a shocker, but the German champions may have already received a clue from Vincent Kompany.
That’s at least according to BILD, who give Bayern’s side of the matter today and how, actually, they had their own doubts about the Liverpool bound star.
The newspaper explains that Bayern were left shocked when Wirtz’s father, who is also his advisor, announced that his son wanted to leave the Bundesliga and move to Liverpool instead.
That came after Bayern chiefs had met him in a secret meeting and tried everything to convince him to join them. This meeting took place on May 18th in a hotel suite in Munich. Wirtz spent an hour speaking to Bayern coach Vincent Kompany separately. The Belgian brought a laptop with a presentation for Wirtz.
The midfielder then say in a hotel suite with Bayern boss Uli Hoeneß, sporting director Max Eberl, sporting director Christoph Freund, former Bayern boss and supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.
They tried everything but Kompany “already expressed serious doubts” about the transfer taking place. It seems he wasn’t convinced.
That is because Liverpool and Arne Slot had already been working on him since March. Liverpool and Slot’s passion, plus the clear description of how they intended to use him, convinced him to join the Reds.
It appears he had already been swayed and so he chose Liverpool, leaving Bayern disappointed as their extensive efforts had fallen short. Kompany, though, seemingly knew already, once he had met with Wirtz.
