Costa Rica boss Luis Fernando Suárez has revealed why he’s left Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Keylor Navas out of his latest squad, despite him being “one of the best in the world”.
AM Prensa cover comments from the Costa Rica boss today after he announced his squad for the upcoming international break, during which his side will take on Martinique and Panama.
The major news from the announcement was the absence of Navas, who has been his country’s number one since making his debut in October 2008.
He’s made 110 appearances for his country since then, regularly earning call ups even when he wasn’t getting regular playing time at PSG in recent years.
His situation has changed since January, when he joined Nottingham Forest on loan from the French giants until the end of the season.
He’s been the number one in Steve Cooper’s side since, putting in a series of impressive performances as Nottingham Forest battle against relegation from the Premier League.
That’s not been enough to keep him in the international setup, but Suárez insists it is simply a case of looking to the future.
“Within what I have discussed with Navas, there is something that is clear to me: Keylor is the number one goalkeeper in this country and is one of the best in the world,” he said at a press conference.
“I will always dream of having him but I must also look at other things, look at options because at a certain time he is not here to see how these players respond.
“For that reason, I have decided not to call Keylor Navas, I want to look at options for the future.”
