Ajax manager Maurice Steijn has commented on Calvin Bassey’s potential move to Fulham as the situation appears to get messy between the relevant parties.
Voetbalzone cover comments from the Ajax manager after a friendly clash against Anderlecht, which Bassey did not feature in.
The defender was left on the bench for the clash, with Steijn electing to not hand him any minutes and risk an injury as the player negotiates a move to Craven Cottage.
Fulham have been targeting the defender over the last week or so in something of a developing transfer saga.
It initially appeared that they wouldn’t be able to get him before it was later explained that Ajax had told Bassey he was not a part of their plans, and he could leave.
That reportedly led the player to change his mind on a transfer and accept that he needed to join Fulham this summer but that was followed by a report today indicating that was not the case, with his agents reportedly furious about the situation and what has occurred.
Now Steijn has offered up some explanation of what’s going on behind the scenes and why Bassey did not feature for Ajax in the Anderlecht clash.
“He’s there, because it’s not quite finished yet,” he told Ziggo Sport.
“Because we don’t want to run the risk of injuries, we decided in consultation not to use him today. We will see which way it goes in the coming days.”
