Clearly unwanted at Southampton, Jordy Clasie needs to find himself a new forever home, and thankfully there’s a club publicly pushing for his signature.
Earlier on Thursday, we covered quotes by Max Huiberts, AZ Alkmaar’s director, who confirmed there had been contact between the club’s manager and the Saints player recently, and all they could do for now was ‘wait and see’ how the affair developed.
Now, it’s the aforementioned manager’s turn to give an update on the situation, as VI in the Netherlands relayed Arne Slot’s comments during a press conference.
He said: “Jordy is enthusiastic (about a move to AZ) and it’s now up to Max Huiberts to sort things out with him and Southampton.”
Bought for £13.5m back in 2015, Clasie never managed to have the desired impact at St Mary’s, leading to a loan to Club Brugge back in 2017-18, which was then followed by the temporary deal that sent him to Feyenoord last season.
With just one year left on his contract with Southampton, it’s now or never for the Premier League side to recoup some of that money.
Slot continued: “I spoke to Jordy about what his role in the team could be. He’s good on the ball, good at passing, and he’s what we’re looking for at that position.”
The new AZ Alkmaar manager has made his intentions clear, and there’ll be hope Huiberts doesn’t ‘wait and see’ for too long before springing into action.
Unless Southampton have unreasonable demands, this should be done fairly quickly, seeing as all parties seem keen.
