Every transfer window there’s a few stories which raise the eyebrow so much it almost becomes part of the hairline.
There’s the expected huge claims such as Lionel Messi, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar to Manchester United, and sometimes even a Wesley Sneijder or Kevin Strootman thrown in for old times’ sake, and then something pops up which isn’t quite as expected… like Nani to Manchester United.
Yes, THAT Nani. The Nani who Manchester United loaned out to Sporting in order to sweeten the Marcos Rojo deal, and the same Nani who the club sold to Fenerbahce last summer for just over £4m.
Turkey’s DHA have reported Manchester United have knocked on the door of their old player, encouraged to do so by new manager Jose Mourinho. Nani has a €8m release clause and Manchester United ‘will sit at negotiating table’ to try and do a deal.
Usually this may bring up claims of Jorge Mendes trickery, but Nani moved over to Federico Pastorello, and the experienced Italian agent certainly wouldn’t be behind these claims.
Perhaps it’s Fenerbahce trying to get the player’s release clause well known, and also that they’d be willing to talk about that, insinuating it could be cheaper. Or perhaps it’s absolute nonsense. Or, lastly, perhaps we’re being way too cynical and this is a deal in the making.
Nani has got pace, he can play on the right, he’s used to the Premier League, Mourinho watched him play for Portugal recently, he’s only 29 years of age and would have a point to prove… silly season is getting to us all.
