Speaking to Portuguese outlet Sport TV this week, Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic talked about his feelings for his former club Benfica.
The 32-year-old teased with the possibility of returning to Lisbon one day, even though he claimed he’s happy at Old Trafford for now.
Well, that was enough for many people to start wondering if the Eagles could manage to sign the Serbian player soon. Some of them, however, disagree with it.
Live on TVI24, journalist Rui Pedro Braz admits that Matic would have a place in any Portuguese club. He, however, doesn’t think Benfica would make this kind of signing anytime soon.
He claims that Benfica could never pay the salary that Matic has at Manchester United, and adds that the Eagles shouldn’t start signing elder players who only want to finish their careers at the Estádio da Luz.
The journalist points out the arrivals of Jan Vertonghen and Nicolas Otamendi as different cases, since they both arrived on good deals and have been proving their worth at the club. In his opinion, however, this isn’t a model which Benfica should follow from now on.
Matic’s contract with Manchester United expires in 2023. The midfielder was used by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 26 times this season.
