Memphis Depay scored two goals for the Netherlands against Luxembourg on Sunday, and the Dutch needed the player’s contribution in a 3-1 win.
Despite that, some in the Netherlands still found a way to criticise Depay, claiming his performance wasn’t that good and his celebrations were weird.
There are still Dutch journalists and pundits who bring up Depay wearing a hat last year when joining up the national squad as a symbol of his bad attitude, the negativity surrounding the player is huge. Sure, it’s fine to point out he may have been big headed, and that he’s so far failed at Manchester United, but a lot of it has seemed overly personal and enthusiastic.
Many simply don’t like Memphis Depay and so will even look for the negative in a positive.
Manchester United teammate Daley Blind isn’t one of them, and speaking to NOS after the match he was clear: “I am sincerely happy for him. Memphis is working hard and deserves this.”
Depay himself also spoke to NOS and said he’d try and use the goals to kickstart his Manchester United career: “That’s for sure. I will do my very best to draw this line.”
It’d be great to see the 22 year old succeed at Manchester United, if only to annoy some in the Dutch media who would then have to pretend to be pleased.
