Transfer deadline day was a frustrating time for Manchester United fans, with many hoping the club would sign a new centre-back.

That never happened, despite reported attempts to sign Diego Godin emerging, but the Uruguayan wasn’t their only late move, at least according to Il Tempo.

The Italian newspaper claim on Tuesday that during the frenetic last few hours of August 8th, Manchester United made a late approach to try and sign Kostas Manolas from AS Roma.

Unfortunately for them, the player’s release clause had expired on August 1st, and they faced a stubborn Monchi, who wasn’t prepared to let one of his team’s key defenders go so late in their own transfer window (which shuts on Friday at 7pm).

Whether this actually happened, we don’t know, but looking at Manchester United’s rather messy attempts, or lack thereof, at bolstering their squad this summer, we wouldn’t put it past Ed Woodward.

Has a club ever needed a director of football more in this day and age?
