Manchester United’s pursuit of Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer may have been handed a boost, as the German side have already lined up a replacement.
That’s what Sky Sports Germany report today, covering United’s apparent push for the Switzerland goalkeeper and Gladbach’s plans to deal with it.
Reports over the last month or so have linked Manchester United with a move for Sommer, claiming that they see him as the replacement for David de Gea.
That was followed by a claim yesterday that the Switzerland star ‘could hardly pass up’ the opportunity and an admittance from Gladbach chief Roland Virkus that the player was weighing up his options now his time at the World Cup was at an end.
Sky follow that up today and say the German side have already planned for Sommer’s potential departure, stating that they are targeting Yvon Mvogo to fill the goalkeeper spot.
According to their information, Manchester United are ‘very interested’ in Sommer for next summer, when he will be a free agent. A move in the January transfer window is currently ‘not on the agenda’.
Sommer is set to decide his future now that Switzerland are out of the World Cup and Gladbach are preparing for him to depart by looking at Mvogo.
He enjoyed a previously unsuccessful spell in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig but that has not put them off ahead of next summer.
It will all depend on Sommer’s decision, but it seems in Germany that there is very much a fear the goalkeeper will be on his way to Manchester United.
