Following an impressive 5-0 win against Crystal Palace at the weekend, Manchester City made an important step towards finishing in the top four, especially with their rivals United losing to Arsenal on Sunday.

The Citizens showed no mercy in front of goal, with even Vincent Kompany finding his way on the scoresheet, picking up his second goal in four games against the Eagles.

The 31-year-old centre-back has missed most of the season due to injury, but having started and completed five of his club’s last six league games, the Belgium international believes all of that is now behind him.

Speaking to DH in his home country, he said: “My year has been frustrating, but, at the same time, I’ve continued to progress and learn. I think that it’s a weakness to think you can only learn and progress when fit.

“With the right state of mind, you can always progress, and that’s what I did. It wasn’t great for me game wise, but it remains a special season, and it can be one that helps me prepare for a fantastic season next year.”

Kompany is pleased with how he has come back from injury, and so are Manchester City who haven’t lost in their last five games, even if they did drop points against a resilient Middlesbrough.

Asking fans last week to judge Pep Guardiola on next season rather than this one, a lot of people will also do the same with the Belgian centre-back, with many believing his best years are behind him.

He’s now out to prove everyone wrong.
