Having pulled off quite the coup by convincing Stefan de Vrij to leave Lazio on a free and join Inter, the Italian side’s director of football, Piero Ausilio, isn’t ready to rest on his laurels.
According to InterLive, fresh off that success, the 46-year-old is looking at the next opportunity, and he’s turned his attention to Vincent Kompany.
We haven’t really covered this website in great detail before, doing so once in 2016, so we can’t tell you what their track record is like, therefore we’ll be taking this with a pinch of salt for now.
Nevertheless, we’ll play along, and the outlet claim that with the Belgian’s contract being up at the end of the season, Inter are looking to give him a final adventure before retirement, as the aforementioned Dutchman looks like the only long-term option for now.
That’s why bringing in an experienced defender likes Kompany could be the solution to a lot of potential 2019 problems, but he isn’t the only one.
Also out of contract next summer is Eliaquim Mangala, who has never managed to convince either Pep Guardiola or the Manchester City fans, and is a far more realistic option for Inter.
As for Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, also mentioned, Tottenham’s options for an extra year on each of their deals stand in Inter’s way of a free transfer.
Our guesses for the summer of 2019: Kompany, who has six appearances this season, gets a new short term contract and eventually retires either at City or in his home country, while Mangala is allowed to leave on a free for new pastures.
