When reporting that Sporting boss Ruben Amorim is one of the favourites to take over at Liverpool, the English media called the coach… Special One 2.
That’s surely one of the worst nicknames he could get, so it’s no surprise that he now does his best to erase the idea.
Amorim today spoke to the Portuguese media, and as reported by O Jogo, the rumours about Liverpool ended up being one of the subject in the press conference.
The coach was asked about being called Special One 2 and was quick to say that’s not something that excites him.
“It has nothing to do with it, it makes no sense and I have no illusions about it. I still remember last year everyone was speculating about whether I was going to leave Sporting. There are no comparisons between the great José Mourinho and the Sporting coach.”
Sporting are currently on top of the Portuguese League table, with Amorim having a big chance of leading them to his second league title, so he surely won’t be distracted right now.
There’s a €20m release clause to take him away from the Lions before 2026, and the manager and his club seem really relaxed about the whole situation.
Amorim even joked about reports Sporting are looking for his successor. Whilst the prospect of a move to Liverpool may be real, it’s certainly not rocking the Portuguese club right now.
