Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken may have wasted his big chance to establish himself as the Netherlands number one with a nervous performance against the Republic of Ireland.
That’s according to journalists Pam Sedee, Valentijn Driessen and Mike Verweij, who believe Flekken has harmed his chance of impressing Ronald Koeman.
Flekken was made number one for the Dutch national team during this international break, with an injury to Justin Bijlow opening up the position.
Koeman went for his experience over Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, with debate raging across the international break and both convinced they should be first choice.
A clean sheet in the 3-0 win over Greece earned Flekken plenty of plaudits but they were soon forgotten after a shaky showing from the Brentford man in the 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland in the following game.
Sedee, Driessen and Verweij were among those watching and were less than impressed by what they saw from Brentford’s goalkeeper.
“He has simply lost his starting place again,” said presenter Pim Sedee on De Telegraaf’s Kick-off podcast.
“Naturally. This is simply not possible. He was a source of unrest in the defense. By the way, you can make a mistake at some point, but after that you just have to be yourself and give your defense some rest, but he didn’t do that at all,” responded Driessen.
“That was really because of that first minute, because he was upset for 90 minutes,” added Verweij.
