‘Liverpool have ‘submitted a request’ to Xabi Alonso’s agent Iñaki Ibáñez but Bayer Leverkusen have been ‘informed directly’ about the approach.
That’s according to SportBILD, who say the German side are relaxed about the interest and would have been surprised if the Reds hadn’t made an approach already.
The newspaper explains that Leverkusen are in a generally relaxed mood regarding Alonso’s future at this moment in time, despite Liverpool and Bayern Munich seemingly battling for his signature this summer.
Liverpool have already submitted a request to its agent, which Leverkusen are aware of, while Bayern are unlikely to be far behind after deciding to part ways with Thomas Tuchel in the summer.
Alonso, for his part, is simply focused on the next steps at Leverkusen rather than outside interest, knowing he has a contract until 2026 and work to do.
That work saw him recently participating in an event scheduled by director of football Simon Rolfes that saw the coach take part in a workshop from various sectors of the club to provide guidance and ideas for now and the future.
SportBILD, say he provided an image of a man not thinking about a departure, instead he appeared to be a man very much focused on being a part of the future at the club.
The belief is that he may prefer to see out his deal and continue taking small steps on his coaching journey and he certainly isn’t demanding an exit, despite the interest from former clubs Liverpool and Bayern.
Leverkusen know that Liverpool ‘causes great emotions’ for the midfielder, far more than Bayern do, but also believe Alonso acts analytically and may think his current set up is better for him at this point than what the other two sides can offer.
The idea is that he values what he has and the setup which is working so well and that could lead him to turn down interest, even if Liverpool have been in touch with his agent already.
