Liverpool’s interest in Chilean midfielder Gary Medel was widely reported in Italy during the transfer window.
Italian website Corriere della Sera reported Liverpool had made an offer for Medel, but it never looked like the Merseyside club wanted to sign another midfielder after the arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle.
However, according to a latest report from Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Inter want to secure Medel’s future at the club by offering him a new contract.
Medel is currently earning €1.9m/season, and the Serie A club are ready to accept his demands of €2.5m/season to €3m/season.
The 29-year-old played a key role in Chile’s consecutive Copa America successes, and is reportedly wanted by several clubs.
The former Cardiff City midfielder has another couple of years left on his contract at Inter, and the Serie A club could be forced to sell him next summer if he doesn’t sign a contract renewal.
Liverpool interest would appear to have helped panic Inter into accepting Medel’s demands, regardless of whether it was genuine or not. A renewal was always likely, but Inter giving in to the player’s demands so early in the season is a little unusual.
