Julian Nagelsmann could take charge of the German national team until after the European Championships next summer then step aside for Jürgen Klopp, before replacing him at Anfield.
That’s according to SportBILD, who say the Liverpool job ‘attracted’ Nagelsmann in the past and there could be a ‘vacancy’ there soon if things go as they anticipate.
Nagelsmann is currently the favourite to take charge of Germany following the sacking of Hansi Flick and Rudi Voller has already been in touch with his agent about the position, reports Christian Falk.
He’s been a long-term target for the national team, but, given his age, there is a feeling he would not want to commit to a national team long-term at this moment in time.
The problem for him is that there are not many club jobs he wants either, with almost all of them a step down from Bayern Munich.
That would not be the case for Liverpool, who could offer him the huge reputation he wants, and which has already ‘attracted’ him in the past.
Thus, the idea could be to give Nagelsmann the national job for the next year and the chance to compete at a European Championship on German soil, perhaps making himself the ‘favourite coach of the Germans’ at the same time. Then, when that is done, replace Klopp at Liverpool.
He might be available because Germany have long wanted Klopp in charge and the plan was to give him the job if Jogi Low had completed his contract up until 2022.
Klopp was not averse to the idea but the decision to instead sack Low and bring in Flick ‘ruined Klopp’s plans’ in the process.
He’s now tied down at Liverpool until June 2026 but could be a goal ‘worth pursuing’ for the DFB once they’ve gotten the European Championships out of the way next summer.
That would allow Nagelsmann to step down and back into club football, where there would be a vacancy at Liverpool; a club who would absolutely match his ambitions.
