Liverpool could be set to do battle with the likes of Atalanta, Marseille and Barcelona for 16-year-old defender Obli Kouamé Jean Mederic.
That’s at least according to Africa Foot, who report that Liverpool scouts have taken particular interest in the Ivorian youngster.
They report that Mederic is currently in Morocco for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and is ‘impressing with his talent’.
His ‘exceptional’ performances so far as the Côte d’Ivoire have won two and drawn one of their three games to date have attracted the attention of several European clubs.
Liverpool are one of them and sources have told Africa Foot that the Reds’ scouts seem ‘particularly interested’ in the defender, who they believe could be suited to English football.
Liverpool are not the only ones to have taken an interest as Atalanta, Marseille and Barcelona are also closely monitoring his performances. Mederic’s name is ‘constantly circulating’ among the scouts watching the games in Morocco.
They’re keeping a close eye on his development and will likely continue to do so across the tournament in Morocco.
Whether they move for him remains to be seen but Mederic is the latest central defender, and African central defender at that, to be linked with Liverpool in recent weeks.
They are clearly scouring the market for players in that position, although 16-year-old Mederic would obviously be a player for the future.
