The Danish media seem to be on something of a ‘Get Kasper Schmeichel Out of Leicester City’ campaign. Any rumour linking the goalkeeper to a big club, no matter the source, seems to be grasped and treated as truth, with articles then flowing in Denmark.
Over the past month or so, Jan Molby has advised Schmeichel that Everton would be a good destination, Danish pundits Peter Kjaer and Mikkel Bischoff agreed Goodison Park would suit, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet have dragged a hypothetical Manchester United link from Rob Tanner of the Leicester Mercury, and Spain’s incredibly unreliable Don Balon have been treated seriously after suggesting Real Madrid have an interest.
It’s got out of hand.
Danish newspaper BT yesterday published an article claiming Arsenal interest, backing themselves up by linking The Sun, The Leicester Mercury and The Mirror.
The Mercury credited The Mirror, and none of the claims sounded particularly strong, it doesn’t appear anything is actually happening.
Despite that, Tuesday’s copy of BT has Schmeichel to Arsenal on their main front page. The story also takes up the entire front page of their sport section, and also the entire back page of the sport section.
This time The Sun have been dropped as a source, with just The Mercury and The Mirror leant upon, which means just The Mirror given The Mercury credit the other newspaper (this is headache inducing).
There’s nothing really new or concrete, but that hasn’t stopped the story being displayed as if it’s absolutely huge news.
One could be forgiven for thinking someone with Danish connections is encouraging such rumours to be given far more weight than they should.
