Leicester City have emerged as a new contender to sign Feyenoord star Santiago Giménez this summer.
That’s according to Fox Sports Mexico, who provide updates from journalist Gustavo Mendoza on the Foxes interest.
Steve Cooper currently has Jamie Vardy, 21-year-old Tom Cannon and Patson Daka as the three strikers at Leicester.
Vardy, 37, started and scored in his side’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur. Cannon and Daka were restricted to a limited role last season and it’s unlikely their situation will improve this season.
The Premier League side seem to be looking to bolster their attack with Giménez before the window closes next week. According to the journalist, they have already asked about the 23-year-old.
The Mexico international may not favour a move to Leicester considering he wants to join a Champions League club. Nottingham Forest have recently made offers but didn’t meet the Eredivisie side’s asking price.
“Santiago is putting sporting ahead of money. By the way, Leicester came to ask because they only have Jamie Vardy as a striker, who is 37 years old,” he told Fox Sports Mexico.
“At Nottingham, there is Chris Wood, with whom he would have to fight for the position, but Santi wants to play in the Champions League.
“There’s still a possibility in another country to change teams and, if it doesn’t happen, he is very convinced to stay six more months at Feyenoord. And be careful, Nottingham Forest is not totally ruled out.”
For now, Leicester have only asked about the frontman. Cooper’s side have to act quickly if they want to sign Giménez.
The Mexican managed 26 goals and eight assists last season and has four goals and two assists from three games this season.
