Last week we covered reports from Italy with regards to Giuseppe Bellushi’s discipline issues this season, since being loaned about to Serie A side Empoli. The Italian was replaced by Pontus Jansson in the summer, and it is the Swede who has come under scrutiny after this weekend’s round of matches.
Jansson has become a cult hero with the Elland Road faithful for his uncompromising style of play, but this is beginning to cost the 25-year-old according to the Swedish media.
Sydsvenskan write Jansson received his fifth yellow card in as many games in the loss to Brighton on Friday night, and the way he plays has made him a favourite with the fans, but it’s started to have an effect on him and the team.
Jansson has seven yellow cards to his name this season, and would face a two-match ban if he reached ten bookings, which seems very likely given his recent record.
With the busy Christmas schedule just around the corner, Garry Monk can’t afford to be without his star defender, especially with Leeds United in contention for a play-off spot, and may need to change his style slightly.
Perhaps they’re over worrying in Sweden. Pontus Jansson is what Pontus Jansson is, and if it comes with a couple of bans a season then so be it.
