Leeds United have moved away from the idea of signing Hidemasa Morita from Sporting Club de Portugal, with a poor season for the 30-year-old ending their interest.

That’s according to Record, who report that Morita may be set to sign a new deal at Sporting to extend his stay there instead.

The newspaper explains that this season was plagued with injuries for the Japanese player, meaning his impact in a title winning campaign was minimal at best.

He had rejected an offer to extend his stay at the beginning of the year as the prospect of a move to the Premier League was very much on the cards.

That now seems ‘increasingly remote’, particularly as Leeds, his biggest suitors and now back in the Premier League, are no longer interested.

They took note of his successive injuries last season and that helped to curb their interest, with those in charge at Elland Road now looking elsewhere.

That’s led to increased belief at Sporting that they’ll get the player signed to a new deal instead with Leeds pulling away from any involvement.
