Leeds United could soon make their seventh signing of this transfer window following claims they are on the verge of signing former Watford and Udinese defender Joel Ekstrand. The 27-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by the Premier League side at the end of last season.

According to claims in the Swedish media Leeds United are close to signing the former Sweden international after being linked with the player in the past week.

With Giuseppe Bellusci recently joining Empoli on a season long loan, Leeds United manager Garry Monk is keen strengthen in defence, and Ekstrand is seen as an ideal replacement to fill the void left by the Italian.

Leeds United face competition to sign the Swede with reports fellow Championship sides Bristol City and Reading are also showing an interest in the central defender, but as it stands the Elland Road club are in pole position.

A decision on the future of Ekstrand is likely to be made next week after his agent Martin Dahlin revealed they’ll know more in the coming days.
