Last season, Leeds United returned to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years and months before they achieved promotion, they took Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2020.

The temporary deal was until June 30th of that year and as part of the deal, the Whites had an obligation to make the striker’s stay permanent, if they made it to the top flight.

The 2019/20 season was delayed beyond the aforementioned date due to the pandemic. Leeds used this argument to not buy the 24-year-old and sent him back to the German club.

Leipzig were not pleased with this and approached FIFA to intervene. The Bundesliga side stated last June they had received a “positive response” from the sport’s governing body in Augustin’s transfer dispute with Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Bild now claim Leeds have appealed the verdict and the case will be placed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] in March.

As per the initial agreement, the English club were set to pay €21m to Leipzig and it was to be paid in three instalments.

The first instalment was due in September 2020. According to Leipzig, this amount is now ‘overdue’ and they must pay part of the fee to Augustin’s youth clubs, which is around €6.7m.

Leipzig are now ‘demanding even more than the original amount’. It’s claimed they want Leeds to pay interest of €340,000 on the first instalment, plus an additional €6.7m, which they are set to pay the player’s youth teams.

Bild state that in April 2020, Marcelo Bielsa’s side requested Leipzig give an extension on the player’s loan deal and also the date for the purchase option.

The outlet are of the belief Leeds have ‘almost no chance’ to get a verdict in their favour.

If the judgement goes against the English club, the report states Leeds will be given 45 days of time to pay the first instalment. ‘Otherwise, there will be a transfer ban from FIFA’.
