Matteo Darmian’s future at Manchester United is less certain than it could be, as Jose Mourinho prefers Antonio Valencia at right back, and there’s no huge need for Darmian to deputise at left back, even if Luke Shaw wasn’t available.
The 26-year-old hasn’t featured for a single minute this season, but is likely to feature during domestic cup games and Europa League.
However, reports in the Italian media continue to link him with a return to the Serie A.
According to Italian website Calciomercato, Inter Milan tried to sign Darmian during the transfer window, and even sent Manchester United an email detailing their official approach.
However, Jose Mourinho isn’t keen on selling Darmian, as he sees the Italian defender as a back-up option.
Calciomercato say Mourinho appreciates Darmian’s polite behaviour and the ability to play on the either side of the defence. Darmian is reportedly convinced by Inter’s project under the new Chinese owners, but is ready to fight for his place at Old Trafford.
It’s reported several clubs could show interest in signing Darmian in the January transfer window.
Juventus maintain a long term interest in the Italian international, and see him as a perfect replacement for Stephan Lichtsteiner, whilst AS Roma and Fiorentina are also believed to be keen on signing him.
However, Calciomercato admit it’d be very difficult to sign Darmian, with Mourinho standing in the way.
