Super agent Jorge Mendes tried to set up a swap deal between AC Milan and Everton for Rafa Leao and James Rodriguez.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who say the deal has ultimately been put on the backburner by Leao not being interested in the move.

The website explains that while Milan do not see selling the striker as a ‘necessity’, they do see him as an opportunity to cash in and finance transfers into the club.

They are looking for at least €30m, a figure that would allow them to record a ‘significant capital gain’ in the books and give those in charge room to manoeuvre in terms of signings.

Leao does not lack options should he leave, and his agent, Mendes, announced to the Rossoneri’s management that Everton and Wolves were keen just under a month ago.

With Everton, he had ‘tried to set up’ an exchange with Rodriguez, who is another of his clients and would like to leave Goodison Park.

The key to the move is Leao, though, and at the moment, he is not convinced by the offers he has on the table. He would prefer to stay at Milan, although a move is not completely off the cards for him.

Borussia Dortmund could change the situation as they are also keen and would be a ‘more than welcome destination’ for the striker should it be offered.

If they make a concrete offer, things could ‘take off quickly’, with Everton very much not in the picture as far as the striker is concerned.
