Raphael Varane to Manchester United looks like it could be a real thing.

After years of the defender being linked with a move to Old Trafford, this summer the rumours seem to have more to them. That’s largely down to the Frenchman now having less than a year left on his contract and Real Madrid struggling to get a renewal.

For months it’s been reported in Spain that Varane fancies a new challenge having won it all with Los Blancos. Manchester United have been mentioned in most of the reports, and whilst there’s always a chance he’ll renew with Madrid, now isn’t the best time to press the club on contract issues.

Covi-19 has rocked football finances around Europe, especially at clubs who already had shaky economic outlooks. Sergio Ramos tried to hold out for a better renewal deal, and then found the initial offer withdrawn and his time with Madrid come to an end.

Sport report Varane is ‘on the exit ramp’ and they say Real Madrid have ‘already thrown in the towel’ with regards to a renewal. That’s why the Spanish club have opened negotiations with Manchester United.

Over at Marca they believe that should the defender leave then Madrid will look at options within to replace him, rather than going for a big signing.
