Here’s one story we never thought we’d write: Gennaro Gattuso could end up being Newcastle United’s manager next season.

At least, that’s what Gazzetta dello Sport are alluding to in their Tuesday edition, as they explain the Milan manager recently met with Jorge Mendes for a dinner in the Italian city.

The newspaper point out the two have been friends for a while, but this meeting was more than just two acquaintances reminiscing the good old times: business was being discussed.

Still contracted to the Serie A side until 2021, it appears Gattuso is considering his options (his relationship with Leonardo, their director of football, is ‘on a razor’s edge’) and one brought up by the super agent was the possibility of managing at Newcastle.

Gazzetta explain that while Rafa Benitez is currently in talks about renewing his contract at Newcastle, the negotiations aren’t without their difficulties, leading the Premier League club to consider options in case an agreement isn’t reached.

Among those is Gattuso, although nothing concrete has happened for the time being.

The season has yet to finish, and Milan are still in a Champions League spot, tied on points with Atalanta with five games to go.

Should they drop out of the top four and miss out on the elite European competition next season, then things might start moving.
