On Wednesday, Lazio came from behind to beat Celtic 2-1 in the Champions League tie at Celtic Park.
Kyogo Furuhashi gave Brendan Rodgers’ side the lead in the 12th minute but it was cancelled by Matías Vecino’s goal during the half hour mark, before Pedro netted the winner in the extra time at Celtic Park.
Calciomercato state there are three reasons why the win over Celtic is important for the Serie A side. The first one is because they came from behind to seal a win and it has seen them lead the group table, which is the second reason.
The result at Celtic Park was Lazio’s first away win in the Champions League in 20 years, and this is the third key reason.
Therefore, Maurizio Sarri’s side must celebrate this ‘important result’, even if it doesn’t reflect progress since ‘Celtic attacked more’ in the European tie.
Lazio had initially allowed Rodgers’ side to assert themselves in the game and Calciomercato say this is perhaps due to the atmosphere created by Celtic fans.
Meanwhile, La Lazio Siamo Noi state ‘it was revenge’ on Celtic for the two defeats suffered by the Italian club against the same opponent in the Europa League in 2019, which is why yesterday’s win was ‘beyond a simple divine punishment’.
The three games ended with a 2-1 scoreline and the outlet states there were similarities in these three matches between Lazio and Celtic.
They say Vecino’s equaliser felt ‘nothing more than a glimmer of hope’ for Lazio, but they were able to take ‘revenge’ against the Scottish club in the end.
‘Revenge, however, as is often repeated, is a dish that must be served cold, frozen, just as the Scottish fans were (frozen!) when Pedro took the lift and, with an impeccable header, wrong-footed Hart,’ La Lazio Siamo Noi state.
‘It is in that moment, in that precise moment, that Lazio achieved its redemption, the moment in which the fans’ eyes filled with joy and their voices escaped in exultation. It is there that Lazio took revenge on Celtic, four years later…’
