Rúben Amorim arrived at Sporting CP training at around 10am this morning. He’ll be at the club’s base all day, ahead of their Taca da Liga match against Nacional tonight.
Therefore, the press who are primed to follow him around Lisbon are having to show a bit of patience for now.
Earlier today we covered reports from Portugal which stated Manchester United want the manager in charge for their match against Chelsea. That game is on Sunday, so there’s the need to rush.
There’s also been claims in Portugal that three Manchester United officials are travelling to Lisbon, with the plan to seal the deal for Amorim after that match against Nacional tonight.
The media in Portugal are looking for people connected to Sporting to comment on the likely move. Record have managed to get a word with Carlos Pereira, who was previously an assistant manager at the club way before Amorim got there.
He’s made clear what a loss it is set to be for the Portuguese club.
Record quote him as saying: “It will be an irreparable loss. Not only because of the work he’s been doing, but also because of the team’s current situation.
“Money talks louder and, when that’s the case, it becomes an unequal fight, because Sporting will not have the financial capacity to overcome United’s offer.
“It’s legitimate that he can embrace a project of this size. It’s normal, as much as he likes being at Sporting and Sporting likes to have him at the head of professional football. These are opportunities that, sometimes, only appear once. It was something that was already guessed, given the work that Rúben Amorim has developed. It was natural that, sooner or later, a proposal like this would appear.”
Pereira also said he believes the Sporting manager will take at least some of his backroom staff with him: “It’s natural that he can choose the people who go with him to help him give a personal touch to the club. Basically doing what he did at Sporting.”
