Liverpool strengthened their attack by adding Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez to their squad in this calendar year.
The Merseyside club signed the Colombia international from FC Porto in January and took the Uruguayan from their league rivals, Benfica, in the summer.
Díaz was wanted by a few other clubs before Liverpool completed his signing. The list includes Barcelona and their interest in the forward has been revealed by the La Liga side’s president, Joan Laporta.
The Catalan club’s chief made a trip to Colombia, where he attended a press conference in Bogotá. This is where he was quizzed whether Barcelona tried to sign the current Reds star.
Responding to that, relayed by Marca, Laporta explained: “At that time we ended up with a difficult economic situation that we had to resolve and reverse… And Liverpool were ahead of us.”
“He’s a great player who has a great sense of belonging to Liverpool and I’m not going to talk about him anymore, but we were interested at the time that he was leaving Porto for Liverpool. We had a conversation with his representative, but they already had it very advanced.”
Barcelona were not the only side Liverpool overcame in bringing the South American to Anfield. Tottenham Hotspur also showed interest in the 25-year-old but failed to sign because they hesitated a lot. This was confirmed by the attacker’s father at the start of this year.
After managing six goals and five assists in the second half of last season, Jürgen Klopp’s man has scored four goals and registered three assists this campaign for Liverpool.
