Manchester United are working to sign Cerro Porteño youngster Diego León and this has been reported in South America over the past few days.

On Friday, journalist César Luis Merlo stated the Red Devils have agreed a deal with the Paraguayan side for $4m plus $1m bonuses, although other sources have claimed different figures. He also said the 17-year-old will arrive at Old Trafford next summer and sign a contract until 2030.

Cerro Porteño president Juan José Zapag has talked about the Manchester United target this week and his comments are relayed by ABC.

Last week, the South American club appointed Diego Martínez as their new manager and he was presented to the media on Monday. Juan José Zapag, who accompanied Martínez, was asked about Manchester United’s interest in León.

When responding to that, the president stated the left-back’s transfer should be closed soon. The report claims he has ‘confirmed’ Manchester United’s interest, but his quotes don’t directly mention the Red Devils.

“Diego León, a left-back like no other in the world, is kind of scarce. The interest in him is official and surely in the next few days it will be defined,” he said.

The youngster won’t be able to arrive at Manchester United until he turns 18 next April and this allows Cerro Porteño to retain him until next summer.

“He is in sight, very soon and we believe he can be an important transfer alternative, but we have him assured in the semester,” Juan José Zapag explained.

Journalist Pedro Torres first broke the story about Manchester United’s interest, and he’s explained to Sport Witness what Ruben Amorim’s side can expect from León.
