This is the time of year when European clubs look to those likely to be relegated from the Premier League and circle like vultures in the hope of picking off a bargain. It’s often not as easy they think it will be, given finances in the Championship aren’t such a disaster, especially when added to the coming parachute payments for those who drop.

A couple of days ago we covered a claim from Spain which stated Girona were on the verge of sealing a deal to sign Cameron Burgess from Ipswich Town.

Ipswich Town find themselves 18th in the Premier League, 12th points from Wolves and looking at spending at least next season in the Championship.

It had been reported in Spain that 29-year-old Burgess was on the verge of agreeing to the Girona move, with the defender keen on a move to Spain when his contract expires in the summer.

Wednesday’s edition of Sport, a Catalan newspaper, so close to Girona, covers the potential transfer. They report the Australia international is an interesting prospect… largely on the basis of a free transfer.

Sport don’t have much to add, the story appears to be being rolled back a little. Burgess is one of a number of options to improve Michel’s squad, although it doesn’t sound like a deal is imminent.

One to keep an eye on, but the big story initially published by Marca isn’t being strongly backed up more locally in Spain yet.
