The rise of Guglielmo Vicario over the past few years has been fascinating to watch, as Tottenham chose the Italian to replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks last summer.

They knew the Frenchman wanted to leave, and moved to secure a good goalkeeper to take his spot, with the Italian fitting in very well since his move to Spurs under Ange Postecoglou.

The Tottenham player has received a lot of praise over the past few months, with journalist Lapo De Carlo adding some more recently on TV Play, relayed by Tutto Cagliari.

He said: “I am very enthusiastic about Vicario, who, in my opinion, is superior to Donnarumma and I hope he will be the goalkeeper of the national team. He had some incredible games with Tottenham, saving them several times, and I’m rooting for him because he’s a good guy and I think he trains very seriously.”

The Tottenham goalkeeper had been called up many times to the Italy squad by Luciano Spalletti, but was never used until Sunday night, when he started and finished the 2-0 friendly win over Ecuador.

That was his first cap for his country at any level, which he will have been delighted about, on top of keeping a clean sheet.

Since joining Tottenham, the 27-year-old has conceded 43 goals in 30 appearances and kept seven clean sheets, but his performances have been a lot better than his statistics suggest.
