Aston Villa sporting director Monchi has insisted he is not tired and raring to go at Villa Park, leading their upward trajectory under Unai Emery.
The Spaniard has been speaking to Marca about his move away from Sevilla in the summer and what lies ahead at Aston Villa.
He reunited with former manager Unai Emery at Villa Park in the summer, bringing an end to his second spell at the Spanish club, which had lasted four years.
He was once well thought of by Sevilla after leading them as their sporting director from 2000 to 2017, a period that saw the club establish themselves as one of the most successful sides in Europe, winning 11 trophies in total.
He left for Roma but that didn’t work out and he returned in 2019 in the hope of reviving the Spanish side once again.
Things did not work out that way, though, as financial pressures and a changing market made things difficult for him to repeat the trick.
He therefore elected to move to Aston Villa in the summer, reuniting with Unai Emery to head up their very ambitious project in the coming years.
He left Spain amid questions about his ability to do the role asked of him, something it seems he is keen to dispel.
“The last two years have been very hard in Seville, very difficult, where the demand has already become a problem,” Marca report him telling La Liga Talks on La Liga TV.
“My demand, the pressure from outside is valid, but no one can beat me when it comes to demanding myself.
“There were two years in which things did not go so well, but I always clarify, the penultimate season we got into the Champions League, and in the last one we won a title, which is not like Sevilla wins one every two days.
“I am a special sports director. If the people above me begin to doubt that I have to have that role, nothing happens. If they think that there are other needs or another profile, the best thing is to look for another profile, There is no other. I’m not tired because I’m young and I have strength.”
