Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has insisted he wouldn’t say no to a move back to Belgium this summer.
The Belgian defender currently has two years left on his deal with Tottenham after signing a new contract in 2019.
At 32-years-old, though, he is very much looking at the end of his career at this point, with him set to be 34 by the time his current deal comes to an end.
He’s been a regular for Spurs again this season, but that has not stopped rumours about his future and a possible return to Belgium.
There have been numerous reports over the last few months about clubs in his homeland being interested in his signature, with Club Brugge at the top of that pile.
It’s believed they’ve registered their interest on more than one occasion, but Alderweireld has resisted, stating he wants to remain at Tottenham and see who arrives to replace Jose Mourinho.
The sentiment has always been that he isn’t interested in moving to Belgium at this point in his career, but he insists that isn’t the case.
“That I can come and play in Belgium? Yes, I can. I’m not saying ‘no’ to that,” he told the MID MID podcast, relayed by Voetbal 24.
“I am proud of Belgium. Proud of Antwerp. Playing football in Belgium: I would like to experience that. I would like that.
“That is not always in my hands. I am also very happy at Tottenham. If I say now that I want to play football in Belgium, it looks like I want to leave Tottenham. And I don’t.
“Again: I am very happy there. But I am not saying ‘no’ to Belgium beforehand either. We’ll see if it comes my way.”
